Overview on Qualitative Analysis

Qualitative research is a naturalistic inquiry process that seeks an in-depth understanding of social phenomena in their natural context. Qualitative research methods have been used in sociology, political science, psychology, social work, and educational research. This topic discusses qualitative data in detail and also explains the evolution, methods, steps, elements, types, categories, limitations, recent trends, and differences between qualitative and quantitative data in a pictorial representation.

An eagle's view of Nobel Prizes

A data-driven approach has become imperative to identify the key growth drivers, when shifting businesses towards customer-centric strategies. It's time to showcase a sample work done by our Data Analyst Team in Data visualization.

The team came up with a viz for Nobel prize data from 1901 to 2020 developed in Tableau Public. The viz consists of multiple charts depicting the trends, visualization, and analysis done using the dataset. The viz gives viewers some notable insights as follows:

  • USA is the country with the maximum number of awards throughout these years.
  • The average price of an individual is less than the average prize amount for an organization.
  • The awardees awarded the Nobel prize are mostly from the field of Physiology or Medicine.

G to 4G Evolution

Everyone seems to be talking about the digital world, digitalisation, digital market and more words that either start with digital or end with digital.  The introduction of 4G in the digital development has brought in an evolutionary change in the mobile industry. When 4G was provided free throughout India, there has been a sudden growth in 4G mobile sales that no one ever thought of.

Initially it was 1G, which is a one way mode of talking, just like a walkie talkie, where one can start talking, only when the other person holdup.  With 2G then came up cellular phone networks, which allowed people to send text messages and picture messages called MMS along with calls. With the arrival of 3G the internet usage has significantly increased. More and more network service providers have opened their markets in India. Their services were bundled with interesting packages to attract the customers.

Introduction of 4G has been game changer. Companies like Reliance promoted the service of 4G network by providing free services throughout the nation. Even cell phone companies were forced to manufacture 4G mobiles phones by slowing down 3G mobile productions. This has drastically increased the sales of mobile phones. The strategy of making people to enjoy high speed network and its importance has worked well and reached a high value in the market. Later on the free services were stopped and companies have come up with monthly package deals.

But after the 4G service came into live, more and more online usages came into process. Main among them is Online Money Transaction through UPI and banking apps. Instant money transaction applications are becoming popular. A simple and relatively safer option of money transfer has been made through the apps. This hasn’t stopped with money transactions only. As transaction and payment of money has become easier, the growth of other online platforms like booking apps for hotel booking, cab booking, food ordering, online tickets booking for train, buses, flights, online shopping, starting with clothes, groceries, food to expensive electronics items, etc., even education have become highly popular and attracted a lot of customers. Thus the development of network has dramatically changed the lifestyle of every single person in India.

Four types of inconsistencies to avoid when writing a compelling thesis

However, poor writing and objectionable errors will cause your research study to be rejected. For this reason, a scholar must be aware of the impediments that may hinder a thesis from expressing its intended message. Writing a thesis takes time and effort. While writing, you may make several inconsistency errors. To avoid rejection, go over all the chapters and fix minor to major inconsistencies.

According to thesis proof-readers, the types of inconsistencies that must be eliminated include:

Inappropriate use of capital letters

Capitalization is required in the English language at the beginning of a sentence or when having to write a proper noun. Unnecessary capitalization causes common transitions from uppercase to lowercase. This causes readers to wonder if the author has altered the sentence from describing a specific entity to describing a generic concept. Reading and understanding your thesis will be slowed down by these transitions, which increase the possibility of misinterpretation.

Incorrect hyphenation

Hyphens are powerful clarity elements that make the reader easily understand what is being written. The overuse of hyphens must be avoided. However, simply removing a hyphen when writing paired words manages to convey that the scholar is conveying a different idea.

Uncertainty in numerical values

Many people think that when they write a thesis, they can talk about numbers (1, 2, 3, or in words one, two, and three). Also, the cognitive mechanism used to process numbers and words differs. Thus, reading a thesis that contains both word and numeric form needs the assistance of a translator, which slows down and adds time to the process. As a result, when discussing quantities, avoid conflating verbal and numeric form equivalents.

Unclear word choice

Conflicting word choices perpetuate a complex thesis. Adding a synonym carelessly alters the sentence's meaning. This would imply that the scholar has changed his or her mind, possibly conveying the wrong message. Thus, the rule of one meaning per word and one word per meaning should be followed. If you have used irrelevant words, remove them with the help of thesis proof-readers.

A thesis should have excellent results and perfect English. Eliminate contradictions and comprehend your target reader's intended meaning.

Don’t Waste Food

I would like to share an incident that happened to me in 1997, when I was just starting out in my career. I was working as the Branch Manager for a well-known organisation in Tirupur. We used to buy breakfast from the nearest outlet because we used to stay in Tirupur and work, and after breakfast, I sat in my cabin, occupied with my daily routine.

A young door-to-door marketing lad wearing a tie entered our office for his daily sales. Since we were very busy, he tried to walk away quietly. After a few seconds, he stepped back inside our office and called me "Sir." I asked him what he wanted. He quietly pointed at a table and asked for the packet of gravy lying on the table and asked me, "Sir, shall I take it?" I was shocked and, surprisingly, asked him why? Because we throw it in the dust bin every day.

He replied, "Sir, Every day, I get up early and walk 10 kilometres for a living. My mother prepares and packs me raw rice every day, and after sales, I usually buy gravy from outside. If it’s of no use to you and you are going to throw it away, I can use it for my lunch and save Rupees. 20 for today.

Those words still stand fresh in my mind, and I’m still trying to perfect myself so I don't waste food. Even though I fail so many times, I know I’m much better than before. I strongly believe that Lad would be a big entrepreneur today.

Please don’t waste food. There will be a lot of unseen, efficient guys struggling to get a packet of food.

Making preparations for a literature review

As you begin your Ph.D., or indeed any type of research, you will be required to conduct a review of the literature. Are you unfamiliar with the term "literature review" or why it is required? This section discusses the purpose and scope of the literature review.

What exactly is a literature review?

The literature review explores previously published work on the subject of your research. Its purpose is to inform the reader about the state of your field of study and to critically appraise existing literature. The primary goals are to:

·      Summarize what has already been done in your research area to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the field and how your research relates to it.

·      Identify gaps, problems, or limitations in existing research to place your work within the context of the larger field and make room for your unique contribution.

·      Identify sources that will help you with your research and provide context or frameworks for one’s analysis.

The literature review is critical for demonstrating both your academic knowledge (identifying and evaluating appropriate resources) and the development of your analytical thinking in response to this material.

The literature review is not intended to be:

·      A collection of all materials related to your research field, regardless of their relevance to your project.

·      Annotated bibliography of books and articles

·      A material synopsis with no critical commentary

In many disciplines, the outcomes from the literature are usually written as a separate section or chapter of your research, but this is not always the case. Certain disciplines have their own set of conventions, or the conventions may vary according to the type of research conducted.

LR - A valuable research instrument

Despite the fact that a literature review is a formal requirement of a research project, it is critical in the development of your research. It should not be regarded as a time-consuming exercise to be completed as quickly as possible or as something to scurry through at the conclusion of the thesis!
